Kwok-Yin (“K. Y.”) Cheng, Managing Director
K.Y. has commitment to the “Know Your Customers (KYC)” business principle. His strategic ability is to apply the right tool to unlock opportunities at the right time. K.Y. is constantly honing his well-refined skills in strategic planning and execution, M&A advisory, corporate finance (including debt restructuring and recapitalization), cross border trade and investment, risk management and organization behavior.
A selective list of his many successes includes:
Acquisition of a Southern California based security card manufacturing company by a PE firm. System and loan portfolio integration for various bank acquisitions, e.g. East West Bank’s acquisition of Prime Bank, United Commercial Bank, Wells Fargo’s acquisition of Crocker among others.
Agriculture. Coordinated a California row crop farm investment by the largest Canadian salad packaging and fruit grower. Coordinated alfalfa farm investments by two Chinese investors. Obtained working capital financing for a US Private Equity Group investment in a Beijing dairy operation.
Industrial. Financed the sale of a Vernon, California based garment importer/wholesaler to a Chinese corporation. Sale of a Nevada based battery technology company to a Chinese industrial corporation by matching the needs of both sides.
Environmental. Sold a Nevada based battery technology company to a Chinese industrial corporation by matching the needs of both sides. Financed the first US waste water treatment project export to China in conjunction with the US Export-Import Bank of the United States and the World Bank. The World Bank subsequently became an equity investor in the project company.
Solar system financing for a US Air Force Base (Vandenberg) by equity partners from Taiwan and US, hardware from China, US engineering and software and PPA by the US Air Force.
Development. Commercialized the former Clarke Air Force Base in the Philippines in conjunction with the US Export-Import Bank of the United States.
K.Y. serves on the Board of Leaders, USC Marshall School of Business: Board of the California International Banker Association; Chair Emeritus of the Chinese American Bankers Association and member of the Community Advisory Board of the Huntington Library. He was the former chair of the World Trade Association, Los Angeles Long Beach and a board member of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp.
- Y. received his B.S. and B.A. from Stanford University and his MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He joined East West Bank in 1999 and retired as Executive Vice President in 2017.
An avid reader with strong interest in economics, K.Y. has conducted guest lectures at USC and Cal State Pomona. He has reviewed two books for the Harvard University Press: Dragon at the Door and Operations: China.
